Philipsburg, Sint Maarten

(N18 01.122/W63 02.803)

Before we could leave today, Larry needed to go clear out with customs.  There are only two bridge openings for exiting traffic (one at 9am and one at 11am).  Since we would not be able to clear out AND make the bridge by 9am, we opted for the 11am opening.  Larry cleared out (cost $7.00) and we moved over closer to the bridge about 10:30.  We did donuts until the opening at 11.  One other boat exited with us.

The trip down to Philipsburg is only about a 3-3.5 mile trip.  We were in no rush.  We raised the mainsail just to make sure it was installed properly.  Larry tweeked the lines, etc a little until he felt it was perfect.  The repair looks very good.

We were anchored in Philipsburg bay about 12:30 pm and ready to go ashore.  Philipsburg was nice.  They have a long brick path running the entire length of the beautiful beach.  Restaurants/bars and a few shops lined the beach but only one block inland, are all the retail stores that the cruise ship passengers seek out (jewelry, clothing, souvenirs, alcohol).

We found a little place on the beach that serves $1 Presidentes.  We’d brought a bunch of change from our coin jar and had several beers.  This was a neat idea that Larry had … paying in change.  We don’t count our change in our budget so to us, the beers were free … nothing came out of our budgeted funds!  It made them even more enjoyable!

Back on the boat, we turned in early.  We are going to head down to St. Kitts in the early am and wanted to get some rest.
