Dewey, Culebra, Puerto Rico

We would like to give a shout out to Carrey Garrigus and to Ellis Johnson Elementary School in Laurinburg, NC.  Remember … dream big, live your dreams and the world can be yours.  Nothing is impossible if you dare to dream!

Wow, some days it feels like my whole life has become this computer.  This morning, we went to the Dinghy Dock bar (before they opened at 11am) and tried to get our internet chores done.  We got there around 9:30 maybe.  At first, the internet connection seemed quick.  It didn’t take long for me to realize … it was all my imagination!!!  Things were as slow as … ok, so I tried to think of some witty analogy but failed.  Sorry!  We had our “to-do” list and waited and waited to get each task accomplished.  About 1pm, we gave up and said …enough is enough!  I was able to get the update sent and the photos loaded to Facebook.  We wanted to download the weather charts but it was taking so long for everything, we decided just to go to weatherunderground.com and get the “summary”, rather than the detailed charts.  I’m hoping this will suffice.

Larry took our backpack (with computer/etc) back to the boat so we could go for a nice walk without having to haul everything.  And boy, am I glad he did.  We wanted to walk to a place called Flemenco Beach.  On the chart, it didn’t look too far.  We had checked it on the GPS and it was only about 1.5 miles (as the crow flies).  Well … you know … we are NOT crows!!!  We walked and we walked and we walked.  Up one hill and down another.  Around this bend and then back around another.  It seemed to go on forever!  We kept checking the “tourist” map that we have to ensure we were on the correct road even!

But … after much time of whining and complaining … we made it!  (Yes, I just couldn’t shut Larry up … he can be such a girl at time!  Okay, so maybe the whining came from me and he was the perfect gentleman and didn’t comment once.  Wow, I love him!)  The beach was beautiful.  The water was that tropical blue that we love to see.  But boy, was it rough!  The surf was … well, surf.  I was shocked not to see people out surfing on the waves.  If we were back home, surf like that would bring them out in the masses.

We had thought of sailing around to that beach and after seeing it today, we are glad we didn’t.  It would have been a very rocky and rolly experience!

Once we got to the beach, Larry bought me the well needed rum and coke to try to help my aching back.  Damn, I hate having these issues still.  I’m hoping once we’re out here for awhile and I get more active, the pain will decrease.  Is that wishful thinking or what???

So, we had a really nice walk along an absolutely amazing beach.  I hope the photos do justice to it.  There are also two abandoned army tanks (one is on a hill near the beach and the other is right in the sand/surf).  They are rusting and decaying but still a neat site to see.  Of course, they are now covered in colorful graffiti but what else would you expect!  There used to be a large military presence on Culebra and on our trip over here from Farjardo, we actually passed a “danger area” and the charts said there are unexploded shells in the area.  They warn about anchoring/dredging/even trolling in this area.  When I was sailing, I tried to just skirt the outside of the area as to not have Soulmatie explode into a gazillion pieces!  Anyways, these tanks were left from the remnants of military target practice being in this area.

It’s funny … when you walk somewhere new, the walk seems to go on forever and ever!  The walk back from the beach, wasn’t as bad.  We seemed to actually make progress.  We walked up the last huge hill.  We knew, once we reached the peak, we would have the views of the harbor, the airport and all the familiar surroundings we were longing to see!

We just crossed the peak and were enjoying the sea breezes and downhill trek when FINALLY … someone stopped and offered us a ride.  You know, in no other island where we’ve visited, have we been able to walk any distance at all without being offered a ride.  Here (this is obviously US territory), we walked all the way to the beach and most of the way back before someone FINALLY offered anything.  It was two young girls (one was local, one was from Orlando and their family was from this area).  Although I wouldn’t have minded the remainder of the walk (downhill and with an awesome breeze and view), we gratefully accepted the offer.

They drove us to the “town” and then they were off to explore another beach.

Back in town, we picked up some ground beef for dinner.  I have been craving a really good burger and tonight my cravings will be satisfied!  Larry is grilling right now as I update today’s adventure and sip my glass of Valpolicello.  We are hoping to head to the outskirts of Ensenada Honda tomorrow and experience some of the clearer waters we’d seen on our way into Dewey.  Deep in the harbor here, the water is okay but not the clarity we saw on our way in.  We are anxious to snorkel, swim, etc.  I need to submerge these achy bones and experience the weightlessness of these cool waters.
